Jewish Prayers of Hope and Healing will be produced as a 5” x 7” soft back in order to make it easy to carry and to take the book along wherever you might need to pray. Creating pages that look and feel “rich with prayer” is one of the key goals of design. Mayapria Long and her team at Bookwrights have been doing a fantastic job creating pages are that are subtle and beautiful. The idea is to enhance the prayer experience, but not get in the way of prayer.
For this illustration, I’ve created a “spread” that doesn’t exist in the book using pages 84 and 45 to show what pages with and without Hebrew look like. Some longer prayers take up a spread, while other pages have section breaks on them. Still, this gives you the basic idea of the design. Click on the pages to expand the view. (Not full size or precisely to scale.) For the publishing geeks, the prayers are set in a typeface called Sabon—it has a lovely italic—and Stempel Schneider for the titles of the prayers.
